Classroom walls SHOULD not be covered in purchased material that is not relevant to current learning. The walls of every classroom should be almost bare at the beginning of the year. I have included two links to wonderful pages that explore the concept of Anchor Charts. Students with limited recall, those who struggle with comprehension and the retention of information, especially students that have had trauma, lack experiences or vocabulary, or who need frequent reminders will benefit from Anchor Charts. This anchors students to the concepts that teachers repeatedly teach and reference. Adding Anchor Charts to a room will improve student achievement, reduce the number of times a teacher has to completely revisit a topic, and it also ensures that students learn how to become autonomous and independent in the utilization of their resources.
